I’ve found audio to be a very rich medium for idea expression and dissemination, moreso than video and more accessible than text, particularly for busy people.

Background to audio documentary
May 1, 2006
Nancy Dixon and her colleagues in their book on the US Army’s CommpanyCommand online forum define ‘topic leads’ as the:
members [of an online professional forum] who take responsibility for particular topic areas within [the forum]. They manage and facilitate the main topics of the forum, [for example]: leadership [and] training, [strategy, logistics, human resource management, and family/work balance]. (2005, p.4)
In making this documentary I have drawn on Dixon, et al. (2005) theoretical work, as well as some ideas from the associated communities of practice (CoPs) literature. I interviewed several leaders in the field of online professional forums, open source technology and information and enterprise architecture.
I intended to focus on leadership and community; David Gurr speaks about 'e-leadership'; several others speak about community, and the value of face to face meetings. I hoped to include several edited audio-interviews recorded ‘in the field’ with leaders in Melbourne. I had in mind some leaders who are prolific bloggers, as well as renowned experts in their field.
My aim, in recording several interviews, was to see if what I appreciate about the richness of radio (for example Phillip Adams on lnl – ABC's Radio National) can be replicated in a blog/audio-documentary.
Structure and scope: I intended to keep is simple – minium html; simple links to short audio files (e.g. mp3); links to relevant community forums, books and online resources. Because I need to get participants to sign a media ‘release’ I chose Melbourne-based participants.
Who? Members and leaders from the following communities:
- CM Pros (Australia), (see CMPros Australia Community – via Komodo CMS, cmprofessionals.org – in the USA, or visit the CM Pros Australia mailing list)
- Open Source Vic (osv)/OSIAA (Con Zymaris)
- An academic from a university who leads a masters in knowledge management (KM) (David Gurr)
- ACT-km (not achieved)
- Other Melbourne based consultants in km, or content management.
Steps:
- Draft of questions to explore; block out draft structure for the doco [completed April, 2006]
- Seek indication of interest from ‘talent’ who are available (esp. in April 2006) and willing to sign the media release [completed April, May 2006]
- Conduct interviews [completed May 8, 2006]
- Test audio-editing technologies, etc.
- Create pages and link to audio files [in progress]
